Nepal's
exceptional diversity is manifest especially in
the varieties of music that can be heard throughout
the Himalayan region. Ever evolving and dynamic,
the musical practices included on this site represent
only a fraction of the region's sonic riches.
The music heard here is not necessarily limited
to Nepal--for example, Damai hudke performers
sing and dance to many of the same ballads across
the Indian border in Uttar Pradesh. Distinct regional
identities, cross-border affiliations, and reflections
of long traditions of travel, migration and interaction
are audible in the sounds presented here.
Along
with audio examples, information about musical
styles and instruments, and photos of performances,
this section focuses on the history and current
status of the music and musicians, presenting
individuals' lives and perspectives for a balanced
look at the issues surrounding Nepali musical
life today.
Please
note that to listen to the audio examples, you
will need the free RealPlayer, available here.
